Social Bookmarking Tool: DIIGO

Social bookmarking is a centralized online service which allows users to add, annotate, edit, and share bookmarks of web documents. Diigo is one of the leading social bookmarking tools on the market today. It is used in secondary and post-secondary classes. It has evolved from a simple bookmarking tool into a collaborative destination (website or Chrome app) for collecting, commenting on, and sharing information online. Users add the Diigo bookmarker (Diigolet) to the browser's bookmark bar and then use it to save pages to a personal library section on Diigo. When you find a webpage worth bookmarking, just click on the Diigolet button to add a sticky note to the page, highlight certain words in one of four colors, and save it to your Diigo library. Users can also designate the page as something to read later or share it with other users via Facebook, Twitter, or email. You can also search for content through Diigo using Google or by typing in a term and searching other users’ bookmark libraries.

Content Uses:
Diigo Use in Communications & English Composition
Within writing and public speaking classes, students are required to engaged in scholarly research. Diigo is a wonderful platform that students will be using for their research paper and/or speech assignments this semester. In doing research and or other tasks using Diigo, students can:
  • Highlight text and pictures in a variety of colors and add sticky notes to a bookmarked page
  • Bookmark important websites and access them from school or home and share them with other students
  • Categorize websites with titles, notes, keyword tags, lists, and group
  • Save a screenshot of a website or capture and save an image
  • View any annotations made by other students (of the same group) on another website
  • Save relevant websites to lists in their Diigo student accounts
  • Comment on other students' bookmarks
One of the best parts to using Diigo within the writing class is that students can highlight the important information and not just bookmark a page. It will show how they have processed the data and selected the most pertinent information. This will allow the instructor to give them credit for researching by looking at what and how much they have read and highlighted. Once completed, students who are not good readers have the entire body of work to refer to. If one’s research is poor, then so, too, is the paper. The use of Diigo can provide opportunities for students to apply higher level thinking skills while researching and gathering information before they begin the writing process.
Pedadogical Considerations: With a Diigo educator account, teachers and students have a safe space to organize, customize, and share Web content while learning about a variety of subjects. Teachers can set up an educator account for groups and monitor students' research to provide valuable feedback during the research process. Groups will be able to access classmates bookmarks and forums. The functionality lets educators highlight key text and images, gather pages into groups, and encourage online conversations about the materials. In addition, collaborative groups allow students to gather and annotate their own resources, strengthening their research skills. Furthermore, teachers are able to create assignments that will encourage teamwork and collaborative discussions. Privacy measures are, also, available within Diigo for safety purposes.
